But in 1965 they singed Rookie QuarterBack out of Alabama University, Joe Namath. The team showed gradual improvement in the late 1960's, posting its first winning record in 1967, and winning its only AFL Championship 1968. By winning the title the New York Jets would be going to Super Bowl III, against the Champions of the NFL, the Baltimore Colts. The Jets defeated the Colts in a huge upset and that was when the AFL and NFL merged into one. Following the merger the Jets fell in mediocrity. Namath was dogged by injuries through much of his late career. They reached the AFC Championship game in 1982, they were defeated by a rain soaked Orange Field Team the Dolphins.
