Dirt is pretty important considering that you can spawn near grass.

i agree with this list but i think are the most usefull
1: emerald block used for dec and beacon (this goes with diamond block to)
2: lucky block can only be got in a mod but is very usfull
3: iron ore used for tools and armour
4: diamond ore (yah its gotta be here)
5:spiral lucky block you can get towers of all these blocks in a spiral lucky block!

Correction
Lapis: It is good because it is needed for enchanting and dye.
Netherrack: It is good because it can make fireplaces as it burns forever.
Sponge: It is good because it can make air pockets as 1.8 introduced water sucking again.
Gravel: It is good because it may drop flint (10% chance) which is needed to make arrows and flint + steel
Sand: It is good because it makes glass and can erect pillars for scaffolding which can easily be knocked down afterwards (same for gravel)
