You look around.
Realizing that now is the only chance you'll ever have to read that book, you grab the heavy artifact and prepare yourself. Then, remembering its fragile condition, you lightly graze the red arrangement of foreign symbols on its cover, as if to apologize. Taking in a deep breath, its dark history begins to fill your head: images of death and destruction, sounds of cackles and cries.
You know you want to open it, but at the same time you want to burn it. Such power could not be justifiably obtained by an individual with less than mediocre knowledge and understanding of this universe -- it would be an overwhelming waste, when brilliant minds could use it for the better. Even the thought of it sickens you; it makes you feel ashamed to have even considered being so selfish.
This book had been opened by countless other ordinary people before you. However, who you are, before you encounter the book, is irrelevant, as it eventually possesses you. No matter who you are, the book is stronger. Many have tried, including the ancestor whom you inherited the book from, but the book always wins. You could be the first, you remind yourself. You could be the first one to control the power and keep it for yourself, besides, you have nothing to lose.
