Greetings,

Message from Senior Captain:
On 10 July 2020, the Penguin Watch team underwent many changes. The team gained a new Senior Penguin Watch Captain and Assistant, and new proposals and actions were implemented on 12 July 2020. The Penguin Watch have been working hard over the past couple of weeks to adjust to these new reforms.

As your new Senior Captain, it is my pleasure to introduce the updated Penguin Watch guide! Most of the information about the organization will be listed in this post. The information in this post is subject to change in the future.

Senior Captain CoffeeCow Guards

- - -

Introduction
This rank is for trusted users; users who have substantial amounts of commitment and loyalty to the values of OldCP. The Penguin Watch is for the users who are trusted and are close to becoming an OldCP staff member. Membership here is to prepare (undercover) users to deal with the scenarios that they might face as a moderator. Being undercover means that you have no title and name color; we are to help assist staff when there is none or when they are already occupied with their duties. This rank is not to be abused under no circumstance.

Roles
  • The Penguin Watch
Members of the Penguin Watch have access to basic commands to ensure the safety of the users of OldCP. Those who have the role are prohibited to leak the identities of Penguin Watch members at any given point or time.

When performing commands, one must be careful of what one types. Any mistake in the command or username spelling will reveal your identity to the room.

    Commands for Penguin Watch Members:
    • /warn <username> - A warning is given to any user with a first offense. The offender will receive a message to alert him/her to discontinue their actions.
    • /kick <username> - A kick is given to any user with a second offense. The offender will be forced off the server and will have to re-join into the game.
    • /jr penguinwatch - Access to the Penguin Watch base. Only members of the Watch are permitted in the base unless specifically invited by the PWCs or higher rank.

  • Scout:
Scout is a stepping stone to PWC and other roles within the PW. Earning Scout gives you more chances to gain the trust of others, more responsibilities, and more opportunities to help out within the team. This role is obtainable through being active within the Watch and showing how you contribute to the team.

  • Precis:
The Précis of the Penguin Watch is a member who is expected to attend the majority of meetings to create meeting summaries. This role was created by Zen (Rootss), and she thought the word Précis would be fitting for the role. It means “a summary or abstract of a text or speech.” To obtain this role, you must show dedication to attending the meetings of the watch and must be able to write detailed summaries.

  • Application Master:
Application Master is a role given to a trustworthy Penguin Watch member who has shown their dedication as well as love for the Watch. This role is given to those who have been deemed trustworthy, as the information they have access to is confidential. The Application Master has access to the Penguin Watch email and forums account where users can send in their applications. The Application Master is responsible for reading applications and sending them to the Captains for further discussion.

  • Penguin Watch Captain:
The Penguin Watch Captains, also known as PWCs, are the higher ranked members of the Penguin Watch. They lead the Penguin Watch, make sure that everything runs accordingly, and collaborate on any idea that may improve Penguin Watch. They have multiple commands to help provide proper leadership. Penguin Watch Captains can be identified in-game by their blue name color and the 'Penguin Watch' title.

    Commands for Penguin Watch Captains:
    • /warn <username> - A warning is given to any user with a first offense. The offender will receive a message to alert him/her to discontinue their actions and make sure their actions do not continue.
    • /ban <username> - A ban is given to any user after their third offense. The offender will not be able to access that account. If the offender wishes to do so, they may create an account.
    • /penguinwatch <username> - Promotes a user to a member of the Watch.
    • /pwinvite <username> - Invites said user to Penguin Watch Base.
    • /pwmeeting - Hosts a meeting in the Penguin Watch Base.
    • /summon <username> - The user is summoned to the same room or at its current location to where the captain is.
    • /unite - Summons all members of the Penguin Watch to the Penguin Watch Base.
    • /whisper - Sends a one-by-one message to another user.
    • /pwlist - Views the list of all the members of the watch.
    • /unpenguinwatch <username> - Demotes a user from a member of the Watch.

Current Penguin Watch Captains: Katrules and Sled.

  • Assistant:
The Assistant aids the Senior Penguin Watch Captain in their work. The Assistant is chosen by the Senior Penguin Watch. Some of the many things they help out are opening vacancies, discussing promotions and demotions, editing documents, and a lot more behind the scenes work. Essentially, they help out with most of the Senior Penguin Watch Captain’s work.

    Current Assistant: None.

  • Senior Penguin Watch Captain:
The Senior Captain deals with the administration side and is the leader of the team. This role is responsible for guiding all participants and members of the watch to coordinate and organize systems, events, and roles. The Senior Captain is the one who makes the final decisions and approves of proposals. It is considered as a Senior Rank.

Stations
Stations are bi-weekly reports on Moderators based on multiple factors. According to the Google definition, bi-weekly is defined as “every two weeks or twice a week”. Usually, two stations are given out per month.

Frequently Asked Question
Aren’t stations similar to Moderator appraisals?
Yes, but stations are a bit more in depth. While Moderator appraisals give a general, overall explanation about how the Moderator is doing and how they can improve with short-sentenced tips, stations go a little more in depth and usually include specific scenarios or sometimes screenshots.
Stations consist of two formats starting August 2020. The following description of stations is mentioned below.

  • Week 1 and 2

    • Staff Username: Name of assigned Moderator
    • Score Chart [1-10]: Number score based on collected information
    • Activity: Activity and attentiveness on OldCP
    • Helpfulness: Helpfulness towards users in need
    • Communication: Communication between users and/or staff
    • Notes: *Optional* Additional notes can be added here of information that does not fit the above categories. Usually, the Head Moderator and the Senior Penguin Watch Captain contribute to the notes.

  • Week 3 and 4

    • Staff Username: Name of assigned Moderator
    • Updated Score [1-10]: Updated number score based on possible improvements.
    • Best Moment: Reflects on the most significant or monumental moment during the period.
    • Strengths: Where the Moderator excels at their duties and what they are best at.
    • Improvements: How they improved from the first half to the second half of the month.

The new and improved format for the second half of the stations was created by Layla and approved by both Senior Penguin Watch Captain Coffeecow and Head Moderator Jaden.

Stations not only help the Moderators see what they need to work on, but also provides the Penguin Watch with information on how to be a good Moderator, preparing them to become one in the future. Stations have been a tradition for a very long time in the Penguin Watch, and have helped produce some of the best Moderators. The intentions of stations are not to be taken personally towards the Moderators, but only give them insight on what other people have seen them doing and how to improve from that experience.

Consequences
What happens if these requirements are not followed? There are several courses of action depending on the situation.
  • If you are to do any of the following:
  • Leak yourself or another member.
  • Consistently fail to reach one or more of the requirements.
  • Break one or more of the Damenspike Games HQ rules.
  • Abuse any commands you have as a member of the Watch.

You could face demotion, treason or execution, and even permanent expulsion from the team. If a royal from the South (Emperor, Empress or Emperor Helper) pardons you, these consequences will not be applied to you.

The Penguin Watch Oath
Once a Brother, always a Brother.

You are bound by this saying as a member of the Watch. Once you say the oath that is given to you before promotion, you cannot turn back. You are unable to resign from your position, with exception in a few scenarios.
  • Execution:
To resign, you must be willing to accept execution. Deciding to resign after agreeing to the oath is not accepted. It is tradition to execute those who wish to leave the Watch.
  • Royally Pardoned:
You may resign without execution if you are royally pardoned by either the Emperor/Empress, or the Emperor/Empress Helper.

Salary
Members of the Penguin Watch get paid! You have to meet the requirements given previously stated in order to receive payment, though. Salary payments for Penguin Watch Captains are funded by the Imperial Bank, while regular Penguin Watch members are funded by Buddy at the Penguin Watch Bank, and is in no way affiliated with the Imperial Bank. Salaries will be distributed at the end of each month.

Payments:
Senior/Penguin Watch Captain - 8,000/month
Penguin Watch member - 4,000/month

The Imperial Bank needs to save up money in order to pay every other staff member and ranked user at the end of each month. We are assisting the members of the Imperial Bank by not having to spend money if members are not able (or choose not to) meet the salary requirements.

Application Process
If you're curious about applying, these are the specific requirements you need, and also details you should know in order to apply properly.
  • Make sure you understand the rank by reading the Penguin Watch Guide.
  • Apply when you know it is right; don't apply if you have been inactive for quite some time, and/or are just returning, or when you are still new to the community.
  • Clean record of treason for more than a month.
  • Been a member of the community for more than three months.
  • Great reputation with staff.
  • Must follow the application format that will be listed below.

Conclusion

These changes will take effect on August 1st, 2020. This is the updated version of the official Penguin Watch guide made by former Senior Captain Scott from January of 2019. His discussion will be mentioned after this guide.
As a whole from the Penguin Watch team, we hope that this guide is informative to those who wish to apply in the future or for others to be used as a reference.
As your Senior Captain, I appreciate how the team has revolutionized over the years. Thank you to those who have been supporting this small group since the start.
Thank you.
