Ungoliant, a massive spider. Eight legs. Eight eyes. Super health. Super strength. Mother of many powerful spider spawn.

Ungoliant claims to be stronger than Melkor and there is some reason to believe she might very well be stronger than her former master.

It is unknown exactly where Ungoliant comes from as no one claims to have created her. Some say she could have came out of pure darkness and evil. Some speculate that she is an evil spirit that is living inside of the body of a gigantic overgrown spider. Either way, she became a great ally of Melkor and grew incredibly powerful.

Part of her power and size come from drinking the light from the Two Trees of the Valinor. The light in the two trees was pure power and caused her to grow to a rather large size and to become even more disgusting to look at. This is when Melkor first became slightly fearful of her. Melkor had also promised to give Ungoliant some gems that he had stolen and when she received them, she ate them. These gems also contained power within them and she grew larger and uglier yet after consuming them.

After Ungoliant received and consumed the gems, she left Melkor behind. They would never end up in battle against one another, though she did become one of his many nazgul and fought for him during Dagor Dagorath.

So, is Ungoliant more powerful than Melkor? She could very well be. Though, she was not nearly as powerful during Dagor Dagorath as what she is currently.

So where did Ungoliant get this extra power from? Well, shortly after Dagor Dagorath, there was a search for the Silmarils. The Silmarils were created from the essence of the Two Trees of the Valinor, which means they are filled with power. They were said to be in Melkor's possession during Dagor Dagorath and lost after he was vanquished. Though this was never confirmed. Perhaps she found them and consumed them, which would explain why she is more powerful now than what she has ever been.
