This is a vulture appreciation post! (Hail Melody! Hail Pythas! Hail Melkor!)
There are several different names for groups of vultures. They can be called a wake, committee, kettle, volt, or venue. The name of the group is determined by what they vultures are doing. A wake is a group that is feeding. A kettle is a group that are flying. A committee, a volt, or venue can all be used to describe a group that is resting.
Speaking of flying vultures, one specie of vulture is the highest flying bird in the world. This specie is the Ruppell’s griffon vulture. It can fly at over 11,000 metres (37,000 feet). Let’s drop Tasha from that height next time! Vultures can achieve great heights by riding on thermals (heat pockets rising from the ground into the atmosphere). And unlike Dice, they don’t crash!!
Vultures are very fast eaters too, they can eat a little more than 1 kilogram of meat in 1 minute.
Their great scavenging abilities makes vultures one of the most important animals in the ecosystem as by eating the decaying animal carcasses, they help to keep the environment clean and reduce the spread of disease. Vultures are able to eat rotting matter because their stomach acid is 100x greater than that of humans. This can break down bones, and also kill any bacteria that they eat.
Take that L other birds!
