The 'death missive' is an operation received by the OldCP game server when a player is meant to 'die', or become dead.

Methods

It is programmed to be sent when a user fires a firearm at another player's co-ordinates, or when a sword attack clears a user's lives.

The original visual notice of the death missive

Receiving

When a user receives the dreaded death message from the server, their client will unload the game and display a blue screen with the skull emoticon. The text below it originally said 'You have died – Please make a new penguin'.

Since OldCPv10, the visual notice is the same as before but the textual notice states 'Death Missive – Your penguin has been killed. Please make a new account'.

Before the message is sent, the server processes the account and causes it to become unusable. It marks a stamp indicating the time of decease and calculates when the user may be un-killed. The server does not permit accounts with a stamp indicating the death of a user to login or make any further contact with the game server.

Other Methods

The death missive is also known to be sent with the /kill command. The command was accidentally accessible by all users during a short period on OldCPv9. Several users died as other people used the command against others.

The /kill command also became available for a short period of time on OldCPv10. Users went ham slaughtering each other with the push of a button. All those who killed were exicuted and those who risked their accounts to protect the non-abusive users were given the honor of executing the murderers.
